Cancer / Tumors

Our patients trust ARA Health for accurate diagnostics, innovative cancer treatment, and compassionate care. Our expert physicians use interventional radiology (IR) techniques to diagnose and treat tumors affecting the lungs, liver, kidneys, and bones. Using image guidance, we perform cutting-edge, minimally invasive procedures to deliver cancer-killing treatments directly to tumors.

About Cancer / Tumors

Our compassionate team of interventional radiologists works closely with oncologists and surgeons to provide targeted cancer care while keeping patients comfortable and improving quality of life. Using minimally invasive techniques, our physicians target tumors with cancer-killing treatments, minimizing unpleasant side effects that are common in less targeted cancer care. Patients experience less pain and quicker recovery times, while the treatments have the potential to be more effective.

In addition to cancer treatments, we use similar techniques to improve a patient's comfort level and alleviate symptoms, or to place chest ports for chemotherapy.

Treatments:

Ablation destroys tumor cells with extreme heat (radiofrequency ablation and microwave ablation) or extreme cold (cryoablation). The procedure may also reduce the size of a tumor so it can be more easily eliminated by conventional treatment, such as chemotherapy or radiation.
Embolization blocks the blood supply to tumors and allows for direct delivery of cancer treatments through radioembolization or chemoembolization.

Radioembolization is a treatment option that uses embolization to block a tumor's blood supply and radiation to fight the tumor from within. Injecting the radiation directly into the tumor allows us to use a higher dose than traditional radiation therapy, providing more targeted care and the potential for high efficacy.

Chemoembolization is a treatment option that uses embolization to block a tumor's blood supply and chemotherapy to fight the tumor from within. Targeting the tumor directly positions us to effectively reduce the size of tumors and improve symptoms in some cancers.
A chest port is often used in cancer treatments for easy venous access. Our physicians implant the port under the skin, connecting it to a vein through an attached catheter. Chest ports facilitate blood samples and drug injections, usually with less discomfort for the patient and greater ease and accuracy for the care team.
In some cases of cancer and disease, fluid accumulates in the abdomen or pleural space surrounding the lungs. This can cause discomfort, including pain and difficulty breathing. Our interventional radiologists can use a catheter to drain the fluid and ease related symptoms.

You have questions. We have answers.

Below is a list of some of the questions we get asked most frequently from our patients. If you have additional questions, feel free to reach out to our ARA Cares Coordinator at (828) 436-5500.

How do I prepare for a cancer or tumor treatment?
Preparation will differ from patient to patient, and even from procedure to procedure. Your doctor will give you specific instructions about how to prepare for your treatment.
What can I expect during a cancer or tumor treatment?
All procedures will be conducted using image-guided technology. The type of imaging technology and incision will vary by treatment. While some procedures can be performed using a local anesthetic, others may require a general anesthetic or conscious sedation through an IV.
